Finding a new job is tough right now. With fewer vacancies and more applicants per role, every application needs to be intentional, targeted and high‑quality. Rejections can feel discouraging—especially when employers don’t respond—but refining your approach can significantly improve your chances.
Below are some practical strategies to strengthen your job applications.
Target the “Right” jobs
Choosing the right roles is the foundation of an effective job search and often underestimated. You're more likely to find success when applications are targeted and not just sent to any role that "might be an option".
Read every job advert carefully. Even roles with identical titles can differ in responsibilities, expectations and culture.
Assess alignment with your goals. Consider responsibilities, location, salary, career progression and company culture.
Check if you're genuinely interested. Are you motivated by the role and the organisation? Could you clearly demonstrate that at an interview?
Evaluate your fit. Can you demonstrate relevant experience or transferable skills that match the job requirements? You don't need a 100% match, but you do need to know you're a strong candidate against most of the criteria
Apply at the correct level. Avoid roles that are clearly too junior or too senior, as they reduce your chances of progressing.
Adapt your CV and Cover Letter for Each Application
Tailored applications consistently outperform generic ones.
Highlight your unique strengths. Show what differentiates you from other candidates and why you’re the ideal fit.
Remove irrelevant information. Replace it with examples that directly relate to the job description.
Use keywords from the advert. This helps with ATS (Applicant Tracking System) searches and demonstrates alignment.
Check accuracy and presentation. Ensure your documents are error‑free, correctly addressed and professionally formatted.
A poorly structured or recycled cover letter signals a lack of care. In a competitive market, precision and relevance matter.
Keep a Record of Every Job Application
Staying organised helps you respond confidently when recruiters reach out.
Save each job advert. Keep a copy alongside the CV and cover letter you submitted.
Track your applications. Maintain a simple list or spreadsheet with dates, contacts and key details.
Stay prepared for follow‑ups. You should be able to recall the role, why you applied and what you know about the company without hesitation. If you can't recall these details when contacted, you immediately minimise your potential for progressing to the next stage.
Use your Networks and Contacts
Your connections can open doors that job boards can’t.
Update your LinkedIn profile. Make sure your experience, skills and headline reflect your current goals.
Set job alerts. Automated notifications help you apply early, which often increases your chances. These can be done on LinkedIn and job-boards such as Seek.
Let people know you’re looking. As long as you don't want your current employer to know you're job hunting, a simple message to your network can lead to referrals or insider information.
Reach out to contacts at target companies. A warm introduction can help you stand out from other applicants.
Stay Persistent and Focused
Job searching takes time, energy and resilience—especially when rejections pile up. But every tailored, thoughtful application increases your chances. Stay focused on quality, keep refining your approach and continue leveraging your network.
Job application success takes time but you’re building momentum with every step.
